What is an API?-Who is winning the mapping contest?

API stands for Application Programming Interfaces to encourage developers to create programs that let people search specific information that will be displayed using mapping software.

I believe Google is winning so far, because as per the article, even before Google's announcement , developers had figured out ways to add new data to Google maps.
